2018-ADI
February 21st, 20182018 Advanced Design of Interactive Systems (ADIS)
The Advanced Design of Interactive Systems (ADIS) course teaches students how to build upon the design methods from the HCI Bootcamp to create their own participatory design activities.
Prerequisite: The HCI Bootcamp (Introduction to the Design and Evaluation of Interactive Systems) course.
The introductory course introduces a systematic approach to interaction design,
with a set of design methods that emphasize efficient and effective collaboration
as you create and reuse design resources.
The advanced course builds upon the methods in the HCI Bootcamp, but emphasizes critical thinking and participatory design.
ADIS Design challenge: Deconstruct an existing interactive system and then create a principled design for an improved version.
• Identify key problems with an existing system using: introspection, observation, interviews, questionnaires
• Design and run a participatory design workshop with users with three design activities to explore new ideas
• Create a novel, principled design that takes advantage of at least two generative design principles
• Create and present a video prototype that illustrates the new design
Grading is based exercises, class participation, and the presentation of a final video prototype. Most exercises are graded per team, but some are graded individually. The focus of the course is on redesign: the goal to help you identify key design problems from the user's perspective; and generate creative solutions inspired by design principles.
Half of the class will choose one topic, the other half will choose the other topic. All teams will create a three-event participatory design workshop for another team, on a different topic. This year, you will redesign a sharing mechanism for either Spotify or Youtube.
Class Schedule
Location: Rooms B210 and B211 in Building 640 (PUIO)
Dates: 19-23 February, 2018
Times: 9:30-12:30, 13:30-16:30

Note: We will not have class on Tuesday and Friday morning but the rooms will be open and available for you.
Handouts
Questionnaires develop a set of fixed-response questions that elicit facts that inform the design (Worksheet)
